This is a little poem based directly on a scene from the first book of a forthcoming novel sequence I am currently back to working on. Jak'edrac is the gold male 'Doyle Dragon' on my art page in a few pictures. I've definitely had more success describing him in my first novel, than I have had drawing him. Maybe I can't get my drawings published on the cover my own book, but at least the commisioned artist will have a reference . . .

Anyway, back to the poem. It's a time of despair for all the 'good guys', especially the main character, Phil. This is one of Jak'edrac's saddest moments . . . poor guy. All nine pecies of dragons mate for life, with the female (the dominant gender, despite being smaller an less decorated than the male) choosing her mate. Males outnumber females five to one, so only the choicest males become fathers.

Will the two dragons ever be re-united? just click here to find out (and leave comments?): http://elfwood.lysator.liu.se/loth/p/j/pjdoyle2/lothinprogresssleep.jpg.html

“JAK’EDRAC’S HOMESICK”

by Paul J. Doyle

Brought alive by a man with powers from beyond,

Living, breathing, once fiction but now so real.

I am a dragon, able to reason, think and feel.

Torn from my lifemate, a breach in the bond,

Befriending humans will not heal the pain.

Stranded on a crowded world less futuristic than my own,

Sublime, yet beholden to my Creator, Phil.

My very existence giving me a seventy foot chill.

Vulnerable, betrayed by my size and a golden tone,

Returning to my dragoness seems so vain.

I’m pledged and proud helping Phil on his quest.

The Prophecy unfolds, enemies strong yet so dear.

None of them frighten me like my primal fear.

Millions of miles from my mate, I cannot rest.

Phil’s lover Tracy speaks and springs sad tears to my eyes.

The enemies corral and split my friends apart.

Their leader is one of Phil’s faulty creations,

Using us in a gambit against all the nations.

Even the darkest hour will not still my heart.

Evil cannot last, vanquished by unbreakable ties.

When will I see you again, Jul’eweisa?

Oooh... a first comment... *dances*

And I hope it will post this now...

----Real comment will now commence----

To be truthful, not knowing the background this poem confuses me to pieces. But that's alright. Structural and technically well-executed this is. (note - I SEVERELY dislike the white lines between the lines. It detracts, not adds)
That aside, the ending line was EXTREMELY powerful, imo. It really drew the poem to a close. You have a person here longing for home and, even though you definitely hint at that not being the most important, that last sentence hits you. In a good way mind you.

Making it stand on it's own is definitely a good idea. It makes it stand out and adds to the impact on the reader.

VERY nice! ^_^

2 Paul J. Doyle replies: "  Actually, Jak'edrac is a dragon, not a human, but thanks! (copy and paste the link mentioned in the intro, and you will see what he looks like)But getting that offended at "white lines" is going just a little overboard with nit-picking, yes?

As previously mentioned, this comes directly from my first novel. I'm much better with that kind of writing; to me, poetry is an excercise in brevity and conciseness, the ultimate example being haiku by Basho in the original Japanese.

I admit the poem is a bit of a teaser, as is that tornado/Jak'edrac sketch on my Art page here on Elfwood. A bit shameless, I am. *chuckle*"
